The surname Dowse is from either the Old English douce, dowce or Old French dolz, dous meaning 'sweet, pleasant'. My Dowse ancestors came from Linclonshire in the South Kyme/Swineshead area.

Mary Ann Dowse

Gt Gt Gt Grandmother 1834 -

Mary Ann was born at Old Leake, Lincolnshire in 1834. Before 1857 she moved to Swineshead, Lincolnshire. On 18th May 1857 she married George Northern of South kyme, Lincolnshire at Swineshead. In 1858 Mary Ann gave birth to their first child, Thomas. By 1860 they had moved to nearby Swineshead, Lincolnshire, and there they had their second son John, followed by Richard (born at Helpringham, Lincolnshire) in 1868. In 1871 Mary Ann gave birth to their first daughter, Rose, followed by Ada (1873), and Joseph (1875). By 1881 the family had moved to Heckington, Lincolnshire.
